Chemical Biology RCR Workshop – Intrinsic Asymmetry: Mentor/Mentee Responsibilities and Relationships.

“When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master” Having a strong mentor/mentee relationship is just important for becoming a Jedi as earning a PhD.  Learning from your thesis advisor and committee members is a central part of graduate education and postdoctoral training.  However, these relationships are inherently asymmetric- the mentor holds much of the power and influence.  Thus, there are challenges as well as shared responsibilities associated with teaching and training, particularly in academic science.  The session will involve interactive small group discussions focusing on key issues and best practices regarding mentor/mentee relationships.  Resources for discussion will include video case studies provided by US DHS Office of Research Integrity and recent literature/commentary.  This session is aimed primarily at graduate students and postdocs but scientists at all levels all are welcome. It is designed to fulfill an hour of in person training for attendees in programs with specific Responsible Conduct of Research requirements. Size: 20-30
