Abstract | Since its inception in 2014, the Kennemur Research Group at Florida State University has undertaken new approaches to improve the polymerizability of misfit monomers. These monomers are often overlooked because they typically bear some form of structural design that renders them non-ideal for various types of polymerizations. For example, monomers with low ring strain energy are not considered good monomers for enthalpy-driven ring opening polymerizations. Monomers with too much steric hinderance near the active site of propagation are typically accompanied with low conversions and low ceiling temperatures. This talk will discuss a few vignettes of successful research to improve their polymerizability and render completely new materials for various applications. |
